(ORDO NEWS) — General Motors and Lockheed Martin have announced plans for a series of electric lunar rovers for future space missions.
It was announced that batteries developed by GM will be tested in space at the end of 2022. The companies have also set an ambitious goal: to test a prototype vehicle on the Moon by 2025.
According to the project, the new electric lunar rover can be operated for at least ten years on the surface of the Moon, and it will be able to work both autonomously and with astronauts behind the wheel.
The lunokhod will have a top speed of approximately 19 kilometers per hour, which is slightly faster than the lunar car used in the Apollo program, which traveled at a speed of 11-13 kilometers per hour.
