NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — Laetrile, also known as vitamin B17, is not actually a vitamin, but a synthetic form of amygdalin, a substance found in some nuts, plants, and fruit seeds. This agent, although often called a vitamin, has not been recognized by the American Institute of Nutrition as vital. There is currently no scientific evidence that laetrile helps prevent or treat cancer in humans, reported by the National Cancer Institute.
Vitamin B17, also known as Laetrile, contains hydrogen cyanide, which turns into cyanide when it enters the body. This substance is considered effective in killing cancer cells, which has been confirmed in laboratory experiments and animal studies. There is some evidence that laetrile may be helpful in treating certain types of cancer.
However, there is not enough convincing scientific evidence that laetrile can effectively treat cancer in humans. Reviews of studies conducted in this direction indicate that the claimed benefits of laetrile are not supported by controlled clinical studies.
In addition, there is a risk of serious side effects from cyanide poisoning after taking laetrile, as highlighted by the results of some clinical studies.
According to the results of clinical trials of the National Cancer Institute, in half of the patients taking Laetrile, the size of the tumor increased by the end of the course of treatment, and 7 months after the end of treatment, the tumor increased in all patients.
In light of these facts and international medical recommendations, it is important to remember that the most effective measures for the prevention and treatment of cancer are a healthy lifestyle and timely consultation with a doctor.
To avoid getting cancer, it is important to follow a number of recommendations:
- Quit smoking : Do not smoke, including hookahs and avoid second-hand smoke. Even women who live with smokers have a significantly increased risk of lung cancer.

- Avoiding exposure to the sun without protection : General protection from UV radiation helps avoid skin cancer. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing.
- Lead a healthy lifestyle : Regular physical activity, a balanced diet and limiting alcohol consumption help reduce the risk of disease.
- Protection against infections : Avoid infections that can lead to cancer, such as human papillomavirus and hepatitis B and C.
- Getting screened : Regular physical exams and screenings can help detect cancer at an early stage, when treatment is more effective.
Following these tips will help reduce the risk of cancer and maintain overall health.
