(ORDO NEWS) — The UN has released a new report that says there is an urgent need to increase investment in programs to prevent extreme weather conditions. The reason for this is that literally over the past 50 years, the number of natural disasters has increased 5 times.

Such indicators have increased due to the fact that in recent years the climate has changed very much. At the same time, experts added that in just the next 10 years, the number of people who may need help due to natural disasters may increase by 50%. The new report was prepared by experts from 16 different financial institutions and international agencies.

Over the past 50 years, approximately 11 thousand natural disasters have been recorded that have arisen as a result of weather, climatic and water factors. They have killed more than two million people. At the same time, if we talk about financial damage, then it reached $ 3.5 trillion.

The study also points to the fact that more attention needs to be paid to early warning systems. Scientists suggested not just predicting the weather, but conducting a detailed analysis of how it will affect the environment.

Professor Petteri Taalas said there is a need to invest in early warning systems. This is especially the case in underdeveloped countries where mortality from natural disasters is the highest. It is also imperative to improve the level of monitoring so that it is possible to prevent the occurrence of a disaster or to carry out timely evacuation of people.
