(ORDO NEWS) — According to a recent United Nations (UN) report, the world‘s population could reach the eight billion mark as early as the middle of this fall. At the same time, by 2023, India will overtake China as the most populous country in the world.
India is about to become the most populous country in the world
The UN has released a report called World Population Prospects , which says that on November 15, 2022, the world’s population could reach eight billion people.
At the same time, the article notes that demographic growth is declining, and at present the world population is increasing at the slowest pace since the middle of the last century.
According to UN projections, the world population will reach 8.5 billion people in 2030 and 9.7 billion people in 2050. The peak of 10.4 billion people will be reached in about 60 years.
Most of this growth will come from just eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.
And what about China?
Now the population of China is about 1.426 billion people, and the population of India is about 1.412 billion people.
Experts believe that India will continue to grow and reach a population of 1.668 billion by 2050. On the other hand, China’s population will shrink to about 1.317 billion by mid-century.
Currently, there are slightly more men in the world than women (50.3% versus 49.7%). However, in the coming decades, the situation will change, and by 2050 the number of women will equal the number of men.
The UN notes that people continue to age, and the share of people aged 65 and over is expected to increase by 10% between 2022 and 2050 and 16% in 2050.
This trend will be particularly noticeable in Europe and North America, where one in four people will be over 65 by 2050.
