(ORDO NEWS) — About 99% of the world‘s population is exposed to microscopic and extremely harmful air pollutants that can be harmful to health. This is stated in a study by a group of scientists.
We are talking about particulate matter (PM, particulate matter) 2.5, at least 30 times thinner than a human hair, because of which they can be freely inhaled and penetrate into the bloodstream.
Scientists analyzed daily and annual RM 2.5 rates in different countries of the world from 2000 to 2019.
As a result, it turned out that only 0.001% of earthlings and 0.18% of land were exposed to safe levels of particulate matter. The highest levels of PM 2.5 are found in East and South Asia and North Africa.
In addition, particles increased in Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and the Caribbean during the study period. At the same time, there was also a decrease in Europe and North America.
Over 70% of the time in 2000–2019, PM2.5 levels were above WHO recommendations. In East and South Asia, negative indicators were noted 90% of the time.
In 2019, the journal PLOS Medicine reported that about 30,000 people in the United States die every year due to exposure to PM2.5.
Measures were reported to have improved the situation, but particulate matter continues to cause tens of thousands of premature deaths each year.
In the world as a whole, according to the UN, the cumulative impact of atmospheric air pollution leads to premature death of 6.7 million people annually.
