US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — In the Italian city of Ferrara, located in the Emilia-Romagna region, which is the second most common coronary infection in the country, the incidence rate is low.
Possible reasons were told by the chief researcher of the Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery M. A.N. Bakuleva, Corresponding Member of the RAS Simon Matskeplishvili.
According to the scientist, the immunity of residents to a new type of infection may be due to congenital features. “This is due to the fact that a relatively rare congenital disease – beta-thalassemia, which protects residents from malaria and, probably, from coronavirus infection, is quite common in this region,” said Matskeplishvili.
The disease belongs to the group of genetic, it is associated with a violation of the synthesis of hemoglobin. His homeland is the African continent, but it is found in Mediterranean countries. Patients with some of its forms are resistant to malaria.
“Interestingly, some experts consider antimalarial hydroxychloroquine to be one of the most promising drugs for treating COVID-19,” the scientist noted.
Recall that currently in Italy 124.6 thousand cases of coronavirus infection were recorded, 15 362 people died.
