(ORDO NEWS) — San Francisco-based Planet Labs has announced plans to deploy a global constellation of 32 Earth observation satellites. The fleet, called Pelican, will monitor political conflicts, natural disasters and the ongoing effects of climate change.
According to a Planet Labs press release, the Pelican constellation is “designed to effectively capture rapidly changing world events as they unfold.”
This is in line with the company’s stated goal of “capturing the entire Earth every day and showing global change to everyone.” According to satellite imagery and data specialist Planet Labs, construction of a constellation of 32 satellites is scheduled to begin next year.
Technical details, such as the operating altitude of the satellites or their capabilities, have not yet been disclosed.
