(ORDO NEWS) — About a century ago, in Esna (60 km south of the Egyptian Luxor), scientists discovered an ancient temple, where they began restoration work. During the restoration of an ancient structure, archaeologists often make amazing finds.
A layer of soot on the walls hid inscriptions, paintings and hieroglyphs from two thousand years ago. In some areas, constellations are shown. So, scientists made out the Big Dipper and Orion. In ancient Egypt, these star clusters were called Mesekiu and Sakh, respectively.
Scientists have also discovered constellations unknown to science. One of them is called Apedu n Ra or Geese Ra. Experts have been looking for a description of the image for a long time, but in vain. To this day, it remains a mystery to which stars the name refers.
According to Christian Leitz, an Egyptologist at the University of Tübingen, Germany, the constellations used to be well hidden behind soot, but now they are being found one by one. Ancient Egyptian constellations were discovered, which until now remained unknown to scientists.
The temple was discovered by the French Egyptologist Serge Sauneron in the last century. Then the specialist realized the importance of the inscriptions, but could not decipher them. The process was greatly interfered with by bird excrement and soot.
Thanks to the well-coordinated work of scientists, it was possible to completely restore the inscriptions, including their original color. The temple itself is 37 meters long, 20 meters wide and 15 meters high. The sandstone structure was erected right in front of the entrance during the reign of the Roman emperor Claudius (41-54 AD). The roof of the structure was supported by 24 columns. The appearance of the temple is not at all peculiar to Egyptian architecture, which adds to the uniqueness of the building.
