(ORDO NEWS) — Experts from the Japanese National Research Center for International Health said that smokers are twice as likely to have a severe course of COVID-19.
The study, which was conducted on the basis of data from 17.6 thousand patients aged 20 to 80 years, showed that the risk of a severe course of the disease in men who smoke is about one and a half times higher than in non-smokers. Women who smoke are a little less fortunate – their situation worsens almost twice as often.
According to Japanese scientists, the thing is that smokers are more likely to suffer from chronic diseases, and also have problems with the lungs and heart, which makes them more vulnerable to a new coronavirus infection.
