(ORDO NEWS) — Daytime sleep can be dangerous for your health. Scientists told about it. During the study, they discovered a strange relationship between lunch break and stroke. This is reported by Express.
How dangerous is daytime sleep for health?
Like any excessive amount of sleep, daytime sleep can have a negative effect on health, especially if it happens frequently or for a long time. Example:
- Sleep disturbance. Napping during the day can disrupt normal sleep at night, which can lead to insomnia and exhaustion.
- Problems with study and work. Daytime sleep can lead to deterioration of memory, concentration and work efficiency.
- Heart disease. Studies have shown that daytime sleep can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension.
- Deterioration of digestion. Naps can contribute to indigestion, especially if taken after a meal.
- Obesity. Frequent daydreaming can lead to weight gain and obesity.
In general, daytime sleep can be beneficial if its duration and time are respected, but if it becomes regular and long, it can have a negative effect on health.
New research on daytime sleep
Scientists from Juan Ramon Jimenez (University Hospital in Spain) told in which cases and how dangerous daytime sleep is. In some cases, it increases the risk of stroke by 5 times.
And if you sleep more than half an hour a day, the risk of developing atrial fibrillation increases 30 times. It is one of the most common heart disorders in the world. People with arrhythmia are 5 times more likely to end up in the hospital with a stroke.
Scientists do not recommend people with heart muscle dysfunction to compensate for lack of sleep with daytime rest.
During the study, experts studied the data of more than 20,000 people. For many years, the information was systematically updated (once every 2 years). Particular attention was paid to the following aspects:
- age, gender, work schedule;
- health status;
- daytime rest, bad habits, amount of time in front of the TV;
- height and weight.
All study participants were divided into groups: those who do not sleep at all during the day, those who sleep up to 30 minutes or more. The results did not answer the question: is it useful or not to sleep for half an hour in the afternoon in general.
Therefore, a new study will be conducted in the near future, which will help determine whether it is harmful to sleep for 15-30 minutes during the day.
