US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The toughening of US sanctions against Iran in the context of the coronavirus pandemic is a violation of international law. This statement was made by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani during a telephone conversation with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“At a time when coronavirus is spreading around the world and there is a need to make adjustments to relations between states, the United States, unfortunately, is tightening sanctions against the Iranian people. Washington violates not only international law, but also international health rules, hindering the shipment of medical supplies to Iran, ” Fars quotes him on Tuesday .
According to the agency, for its part, Ramaphosa also emphasized the untimeliness of measures taken by Washington against Tehran. “At present, joint work is needed to confront the common enemy – the coronavirus. Now is the wrong time to create problems for people by imposing sanctions against them or exerting pressure on them,” said the President of South Africa.
On April 22, US President Donald Trump announced that he had instructed the Navy to destroy any Iranian boats that impede American ships at sea. In turn, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC, elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces), Hossein Salami said the next day that the armed forces of Iran will attack US ships that threaten the country’s security.
Relations between the U.S. and Iran sharply worsened after Washington unilaterally quit the JCPOA on May 8, 2018 and the restoration of US economic sanctions against Tehran, including in the field of oil exports.
