(ORDO NEWS) — Ophthalmologist Brenda Pagan-Duran explained why all people blink. There is not a single person in the world who could not blink for a long time. The reason for this is that the blink reflex is triggered, which plays an important protective role.
It is reported by Live Science.
The ophthalmologist said that blinking helps get rid of dust particles that settle on the surface of the eyeball. Also, almost any foreign body can be removed in this way.
You also need to blink in order to lubricate the eyeballs. In order for vision to be excellent and to be able to focus easily on a specific subject, the eyes need a perfectly smooth surface. During blinking, a special tear film appears, which is evenly distributed over the surface of the eyeball and makes it smooth. The film prevents the cornea from drying out.
Lack of moisture in the cornea can cause painful sensations, because there are many nerve endings in it.
With the help of the tear film, the eye receives a sufficient amount of oxygen. It contains enzymes that kill dangerous microorganisms. Blinking plays an important role in the manifestation of emotions. For example, when a person cries, they blink more often, which helps to get rid of excess moisture, which can also harm the eyes.
On average, a person blinks 15 times per minute. In some situations, blinking becomes more frequent or infrequent.
