(ORDO NEWS) — Climate change has caused bees to become smaller in the US, as large insects are less able to tolerate rising temperatures. American scientists came to such conclusions, reports The Guardian.
The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. For eight years, scientists studied the condition of more than 20 thousand bees that live in the Rocky Mountains, where they recorded early warming and premature ice melt.
The experts concluded that due to climate change, the number of large insects, including bumblebees, decreased, and more small bees appeared.
Bumblebees are considered one of the dominant pollinators in many ecosystems. According to scientists, bee communities will change radically. Bumblebees, due to their body size, have low heat tolerance and will move to cooler regions.
