US decides to push Russia out of nuclear technology market

“The ability of foreign state-owned enterprises to provide a nuclear fuel reprocessing cycle to establish dominant market positions and strong bilateral relations can pose serious geopolitical challenges for the United States,” the strategy said.

In this regard, the authors of the document suggest reducing the volume of Russian nuclear fuel allowed for import into the United States. In particular, it is about countering the activities of the fuel company of state corporation “Rosatom” TVEL.

In 2016, TVEL signed the first contract with one of the American nuclear power plant operators for the pilot production operation of its TVS-Kvadrat nuclear fuel.

Earlier it was reported that the volume of Rosatom’s foreign orders for a ten-year period following the results of 2019 will amount to 133-135 billion dollars. The ten-year portfolio of orders includes projects that must be completed within this period.

The portfolio of Rosatom’s foreign orders includes not only contracts for the construction of nuclear power units, but also contracts in other areas of the peaceful atom.
