US decides to push Russia out of nuclear technology market

US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — The United States should oust Russia and China from the markets of nuclear technologies under their influence, and become a world leader in this area, this is stated in the strategy of the United States Department of Energy, published on the website of the department.

“In the end, the US government will enter markets dominated by state-owned companies in Russia and China, and will restore our position as a world leader in exporting the best technologies in the field of nuclear energy, as well as stringent non-proliferation standards,” the document says. referred to President Donald Trump.

In particular, the Ministry of Energy proposes to prevent Moscow and Beijing from establishing strong relations with “a number of East European and African states.”

In addition, the authors of the strategy want to empower the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission with the authority “to refuse to import nuclear fuel produced in Russia and China in order to ensure national security.”

“The ability of foreign state-owned enterprises to provide a nuclear fuel reprocessing cycle to establish dominant market positions and strong bilateral relations can pose serious geopolitical challenges for the United States,” the strategy said.

In this regard, the authors of the document suggest reducing the volume of Russian nuclear fuel allowed for import into the United States. In particular, it is about countering the activities of the fuel company of state corporation “Rosatom” TVEL.

In 2016, TVEL signed the first contract with one of the American nuclear power plant operators for the pilot production operation of its TVS-Kvadrat nuclear fuel.

Earlier it was reported that the volume of Rosatom’s foreign orders for a ten-year period following the results of 2019 will amount to 133-135 billion dollars. The ten-year portfolio of orders includes projects that must be completed within this period.

The portfolio of Rosatom’s foreign orders includes not only contracts for the construction of nuclear power units, but also contracts in other areas of the peaceful atom. Now in this “piggy bank” at one stage or another of implementation are projects of 36 nuclear power units in different countries of the world.
