(ORDO NEWS) — In the United States, for the first time, the driver of the Tesla Model S electric car, who committed a fatal accident with the autopilot on, will go on trial.
The accident happened in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The Tesla driver ran a red light and crashed into a passing Honda Civic, killing two people.
The person responsible for the accident will face two charges. Not only the California Attorney’s Office is involved in the investigation, but also the NHTSA – the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
And if the fact that the Tesla autopilot was turned on does not appear in the court materials, then NHTSA experts confirmed that the autopilot was activated.
As noted, this is not the first case against Tesla in connection with fatal accidents involving the included autopilot.
“NHTSA reminds that as of today, no vehicle on the market is eligible for full “self-driving”. Regardless of whether the autopilot is activated, the driver must constantly monitor the traffic situation and look at the road.
In accordance with state laws, he is also responsible for the consequences of management using automated systems, ”the agency said.
