(ORDO NEWS) — Amateur astronomer Alberto Caballero, who recently found a sun-like star – 2MASS 19281982-2640123, with which, in his opinion, half a century ago, an “alien” signal “Wow!” and published his findings in the International Journal of Astrobiology earlier this month, has now presented new work.
True, his article did not pass the peer review, but is available on the preprint server and tells about the number of harmful extraterrestrial civilizations.
Caballero’s work is like a thought experiment and has not been verified by astronomers. The purpose of the Caballero assessment is to calculate the number of civilizations that may respond to messages sent by earthlings.
To come up with a final number, Caballero, who is a professional conflictologist at the University of Vigo in Spain, extrapolated some numbers from his professional field into the realm of astronomy.
Caballero calculated the number of conflicts and wars that have taken place on the planet Earth, and then applied this to the estimated number of exoplanets in the Milky Way and used the estimates of the Italian explorer Claudio Maccone, who estimated the number of civilizations at 15,785.
According to Caballero’s calculations, the number of civilizations that could invade on our planet, equal to four.
Caballero’s assessment suggests that, in terms of technological progress, these four civilizations may actually be more like a human community, and there is a mathematical possibility that none of these civilizations are capable of the interstellar travel that an invasion would require. Therefore, earthlings can sleep peacefully.
