(ORDO NEWS) — To rock this world, the entire population of planet Earth must jump at the same time.
This fable is very old and quite unusual. With such a synchronized jump, you can move the planet, well, at least that’s what they say. Is it true or not?
Physicists decided to simulate the situation on a computer to find out what would happen under such strange circumstances.
It is impossible to check this in a practical way, so computers and artificial intelligence came to the rescue.
Scientific journalist Greg Foot conducted the experiment. He relied on a mathematical model. At the same time, 50,000 volunteers were recruited to participate in the experiment.
It was these people who jumped in unison. The researchers, led by Greg, measured the data obtained at the moment when the huge crowd landed synchronously on the ground after the jump.
They scaled the obtained data to the size of “the entire population of the Earth”.
Foote said that an earthquake measuring 0.6 on the Richter scale was recorded within a radius of 1.5 km from where the people jumped.
So the scientists came to the conclusion that even if more than 8 billion people jump at the same time, nothing terrible and harmful to the planet will happen.
Only powerful earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 8 points can affect the speed of the Earth’s rotation. To do this, many more people than currently live on the planet, about 7 million times more, would jump.
Physicist Rhett Allen decided to go further in this research. He wanted to know if humans could even move the planet.
To do this, he estimated the average weight of an adult and a child, conducted a huge number of mathematical calculations and came to the following conclusion: if everyone currently living on Earth jumps 30 cm, then the Earth will move approximately one-hundredth of the radius of a hydrogen atom.
Will earthlings feel it? – of course not!
