(ORDO NEWS) — An international team of researchers has calculated how many years of life people have lost due to metabolic problems, including obesity. The result was impressive.
According to WHO , about 13 percent of the world‘s adult population suffers from obesity, which not only worsens the quality and life expectancy, but also causes significant economic damage, reducing labor productivity.
Among the most common health consequences of obesity are heart and vascular problems, increased stress on bones and joints, and cancer.
Not surprisingly, the global burden of obesity is one of the highest, and an international team of researchers from Singapore, China and the United States decided to find out how many unlived years humanity has lost due to metabolic problems.
They analyzed data from 9,000 studies published between 2000 and 2019. The information was collected in 162 countries and reflected the causes of premature deaths from 370 types of diseases and injuries.
The researchers paid special attention to metabolic diseases: obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
These diseases often co-occur, share common risk factors, and are associated with an increased risk of disability, cancer, and premature death.
The largest increases in the burden of disease have been seen in countries with high average income, education levels and fertility.
However, the burden of metabolic disease is growing around the world, albeit unevenly: for example, mortality from hyperlipidemia has decreased, but the metabolic burden of obesity and diabetes has remained the same.
Scientists have calculated how many years (based on life expectancy ) humanity has lost due to overweight problems. In 2019 alone, this figure was 160 million years.
Particularly worrisome, while mortality rates remain largely stable, the number of people suffering from metabolic problems is only increasing and is placing a heavy burden on global health.
As scientists conclude in a study it is necessary to implement effective preventive and therapeutic strategies at the individual, community and national levels, taking into account regional and socioeconomic factors.
