(ORDO NEWS) — A new study warns that even if we manage to stabilize the Earth‘s temperature by reaching a warming peak of 2°C, the huge ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are on the way to irreversible melting.
Global sea levels have already risen by an average of about 20 centimeters over the past century.
For hundreds of millions of people living in small island developing states and coastal areas around the world, scientists have noted that rising sea levels are a big problem.
The researchers also say the tipping point is approaching faster than expected. “Computer models simulating the dynamics of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica often do not take into account the fact that melting will affect ocean processes, which, in turn, can affect the ice sheet and atmosphere,” the scientists explained.
They suggest that this irreversible process could begin as early as 1.8°C of warming. The model showed that we can only avoid this rapid sea level rise by keeping the rise in temperature below 1.5°C.
