US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Victims of Covid-19 are often co-infected with other respiratory viruses, says a study from Stanford University School of Medicine. She therefore questions the hypothesis that people with viral respiratory disease cannot get coronavirus.
Preliminary analysis by Stanford University medical school reveals that about one in five people with Covid-19 is also infected with other respiratory viruses, the facility’s website reports.
In addition, about one in ten people with symptoms of respiratory illness in an emergency department, who subsequently tested positive for a common respiratory virus, are also co-infected with coronavirus.
The results of this analysis therefore challenge the assumption that patients with viral respiratory disease cannot catch the coronavirus .
“Currently, if a patient tests positive for another respiratory virus, we think they don’t have Covid-19. However, given the rates of co-infection we observed in this sample, this is an incorrect assumption, “said Nigam Shah, associate professor of medical school.
A high precision test
A new high-precision Covid-19 screening test has been created by scientists at the Central Epidemiology Research Institute of the Russian Health Service Rospotrebnadzor.
According to the department, this test meets all current standards of sensitivity and specificity and does not give false positive results.
