Parks and green spaces close to home can reduce stroke risk by 16%

(ORDO NEWS) — Many people want to live near a forest or a park – after all, it’s nice to walk among the trees, especially when you live in a large city. But scientists are convinced that parks near the house can also protect against serious health problems.

If there is an opportunity to choose accommodation near the park, use it

Scientists have previously suspected that green spaces somehow affect the risk of stroke in people. However, few of them conducted comprehensive studies with measurements of air quality in parks.

Now, researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain) have found that living near a forest or park actually reduces the risk of ischemic stroke. The study was published in the journal Environment International.

How the study was conducted

As part of their scientific work, experts studied the number and density of green spaces near the houses of the inhabitants of Catalonia.

Thus, a direct relationship was revealed between elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air and the likelihood of ischemic stroke. According to the researchers, the likelihood of a stroke was 16% less in people whose green spaces are located at a distance of 300 meters from their home.

While greenery and trees may not, on their own, protect people from stroke, scientists say they can reduce stress and provide a place to exercise, both of which are excellent preventive measures.

Of course, there are many more factors to consider when predicting stroke risk, including air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), PM2.5 particulate matter, and soot. As shown in previous studies , the more often a person is exposed to these pollutants, the more they are at risk of stroke.

Therefore, if we really want to reduce the number of strokes, we must also reduce the amount of pollutants, the researchers note.
