(ORDO NEWS) — An international team of scientists found that ocean warming reached new record levels in 2020. Researchers recorded the highest temperature since 1995 in seawater up to two kilometers below the surface. This is reported in an article published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.
The researchers analyzed data on ocean temperature and salinity obtained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Center for Environmental Information. It turned out that in 2020 the upper two thousand meters of the World Ocean absorbed 20 zettajoules more than in 2019. This amount of heat is enough to boil 1.3 billion kettles, each containing 1.5 liters of water.
More than 90 percent of the excess heat in the Earth‘s atmosphere is absorbed by the oceans, so the temperature of the sea water serves as an indicator of climate change. At the same time, the warming of the World Ocean lags behind the warming of the atmosphere by several decades.
