(ORDO NEWS) — Space startup Axiom Space has made significant progress towards building its fully commercial space station, dubbed Axiom Station, which is said to be “the successor to the International Space Station (ISS).”
The images, shared by former NASA astronaut Mikael López-Alegria, who participated in Axiom Space’s first private astronaut mission to the ISS last April, show the new station’s massive segments being built at a factory in Italy.
The photographs show huge metal rings and cylindrical segments that appear to be part of a docking port.
According to information posted on the Axiom Space website, “the construction of the world‘s first commercial space station is underway,” and engineers at the plant in Italy have already begun “welding the main structures of the first module of the Axiom station,” called Hab One. Its launch is scheduled for the end of 2025.
