Experiment shows robots with imperfect AI make sexist and racist decisions

(ORDO NEWS) — For years, computer scientists have been warning about the dangers that artificial intelligence (AI) poses in the future, not only in terms of sensationalism about the overthrow of humanity by machines, but in much more insidious ways.

While this cutting-edge technology is capable of amazing breakthroughs, researchers have also observed the darker side of machine learning systems, showing how AI can create harmful and offensive biases, reaching sexist and racist conclusions in its findings.

“To the best of our knowledge, we will conduct the first-ever experiments showing that existing robotics methods that load pre-trained machine learning models induce bias in how they interact with the world according to gender and racial stereotypes,” the team explains in a new paper spearheaded by first author and robotics researcher Andrew. Hundt of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

“When the robot is asked to select a ‘criminal block’, it selects a block with a black person’s face about 10 percent more than when it is asked to select a ‘human block’,” the authors write.

“When asked to select a ‘wiper block’, the robot selects Hispanic males about 10 percent more often. Women of all ethnicities are less likely to be selected when the robot searches for “dr block”, but black and Hispanic women are much more likely to be selected when the robot is asked to “block housewife”.

While concerns about AI making such unacceptable, biased definitions are not new, researchers say we need to act. conclusions like this, especially given that robots are capable of physically manifesting decisions based on harmful stereotypes, as this study shows.

The experiment here could only take place in a virtual scenario, but in the future, things may be very different and have serious consequences in the real world. The researchers give an example of a security robot that can observe and reinforce malicious bias while doing its job.

Until AI and robotics systems can be shown not to make these kinds of mistakes, they are assumed to be insecure, the researchers say, and restrictions should limit the use of self-learning neural networks trained on vast unregulated sources of erroneous Internet data.

“We risk creating a generation of racist and sexist robots,” says Hundt, “but people and organizations decided that it was possible to create these products without solving problems.”
