(ORDO NEWS) — The head of SpaceX provided the Kingdom of Tonga, left without the Internet after the volcanic eruption, with 50 Starlink satellite Internet terminals.
Channel 24 previously reported that billionaire Elon Musk offered Starlink Internet to Tongan residents as they were hit by a tsunami as a result of a volcanic eruption. The irony is that the condition for providing the Internet should be a collective request of the inhabitants of the island, who could not do this because they did not have the Internet.
In the end, SpaceX organized work to restore access to the network, in particular by providing 50 satellite terminals.
Important ! SpaceX technical staff and the royal government are now working on installing and configuring the equipment, which is expected to start operating as early as this week.
According to Prime Minister Xiaosi Sovaleni, “we are looking for a way to use them (terminals) in the best possible way.”
It is clear that in order to ensure communication between the islands until the end of the cable repair, all means are used from portable radios to motor boats.
What’s happened
- On January 14, 2022, the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai underwater volcano erupted.
- Its consequence was a tsunami from which the Kingdom of Tonga suffered.
- However, the natural disaster was not the only misfortune of the kingdom – as a result of the eruption, the only underwater Internet cable connecting the island to the global network was damaged.
- According to NASA, the volcanic eruption off the coast of Tonga was hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
