Created the most reliable 3D model of the SARS-CoV-2 virus
US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — Visual Science Biomedical Imaging Studio presented the most detailed three-dimensional model of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus with resolution up to individual atoms. The model is based on the latest scientific studies of the structure of coronaviruses, as well as on materials obtained by expert virologists.
The pathogen visualization was created as part of the Virus Park (Virus Zoo) project. Visual Science has previously created detailed models of HIV, the A / H1N1 flu virus, papillomavirus, as well as the pathogens of Zika and Ebola. To render them, the studio staff used the same methods of structural bioinformatics that are used in the development of drugs.
The color scheme of the three-dimensional model reflects an important characteristic of the coronavirus. Bright colors show molecules that are encoded by the viral genome. Gray color corresponds to structures borrowed from the host cell. “Thus, we emphasize the parasitic and non-autonomous nature of viruses,” the designers write.
The work of Visual Science was highly praised by many venerable scientists. “These magnificent images make it possible to better understand the organization of the virus, and for non-specialists to make a virus that infects millions of people practically tangible,” writes Vincent Racaniello, professor at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Columbia University in New York. “I like the option when the particle is open and visible RNP (a complex of viral RNA with proteins. – Ed.) – this is my new favorite model SARS-CoV-2,” admires Jason McLellan from the University of Texas at Austin.
Recall, as of May 14, the world recorded 4,471,144 cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The number of cases of Covid-19 in Russia has exceeded 250 thousand; 2305 people have died.
