(ORDO NEWS) — Bill Gates has prepared a seven-page report on how he thinks AI will affect our future.
Focusing on the future of AI and how it will affect the workforce, Gates laid out his thoughts, emphasizing that the age of AI has already begun.
According to Gates, only two technologies ever struck him as “revolutionary”: when he first saw the modern graphical user interface (GUI); and in 2022, when OpenAI completed his challenge of passing his biology exam in just a few months.
It was at that moment that he realized that we might now be going through a period that would go down in future history books.
“The development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone,” writes Gates.
“It will change the way people work, study, travel, receive medical care and communicate with each other.
Entire industries are reorienting themselves around it. Companies will differ in how well they use it.”
He goes on to explain how AI can help reduce disparities in education and how it should be used cautiously in politics due to its propensity for factual errors and “hallucinations”.
Looking at productivity gains, Gates believes that IT will enter the office workforce sector as an assistant, but will not be able to help in sectors where regular decision making is required.
Instead, it will become a personal assistant, completing tasks based on simple notes, planning your day, doing ordinary things like answering emails.
He may even be able to read what you probably need yourself and give you a summary.
Gates believes this will greatly help healthcare, especially in poorer countries, by acting like an AI doctor and speeding up day-to-day tasks to free up healthcare workers to work with patients.
It will also accelerate discoveries in the field of biology, such as the discovery and creation of new drugs.
Finally, Gates goes on to explain the threats and risks associated with the use of AI , such as that it cannot perform abstract reasoning, make good decisions, and may one day get out of control.
He likes to make up things that don’t exist in an effort to give an answer – AI rarely says “I don’t know”.
In conclusion, Gates hopes that AI can continue to be developed in an effort to reduce inequality and suffering in poorer countries.
According to him, the world needs to establish a set of rules so that AI brings more benefits to society than disadvantages and ensures that it remains on the right track, whatever it may be.
