(ORDO NEWS) — In ancient times, Vesuvius was one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes on Earth.
In 79 AD, the eruption of this volcano caused the death of thousands of people and the destruction of the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in Italy.
In doing so, the remains of the people who died that day were subjected to an unusual process.
Scientists from Italy and the United States conducted a study of the skeletons of the victims of Vesuvius, which were found in the 1960s.
They found that the remains of people who died during the eruption were covered with a thin layer of volcanic glass, formed as a result of the high temperature of the gases emitted by the volcano.
However, the very process that led to the formation of this layer of glass remained a mystery until recently.
Recent studies have shown that this was due to the fact that the gases of the volcano were so hot (over 500 degrees Celsius) that they instantly vaporized the bodies of the victims, and then cooled and condensed, forming a layer of glass on the remains.
This amazing discovery not only helps to understand how Vesuvius erupted and its aftermath, but also gives scientists a better understanding of how our bodies can respond to extreme temperatures and how they can change under extreme conditions.
