(ORDO NEWS) — At first, NASA astronomers thought they were looking at a beam of light smearing their space satellite photo. But this phenomenon turned out to be much more extensive and much more intense.
In fact, the discovered streak turned out to be a trail of destruction and creation left by a black hole rushing through the universe at a tremendous speed so fast that it could fly from the Earth to the Moon in just 14 minutes.
A black hole sucks in gas from its surroundings and throws it out.
“Like the wake of a ship, we see the wake of a black hole,” said astronomer Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University.
As the gas cools, stars form, lighting up a 200,000 light-year trail.
NASA has described the black hole as “an invisible monster on the loose”.
A supermassive black hole weighs as much as 20 million solar masses.
