(ORDO NEWS) — Not just a shoe, but an artifact from the Bronze Age was found in the British Isles. Today, this find claims two records at once: the oldest shoe and the smallest shoe in the world.
The old shoe is made of leather. It was found by archaeologist Steve Tomlinson. The finder is approximately 3000 years old.
The artifact was discovered back in 2022, on one of the beaches in Kent. Tomlinson sent him to the Scottish unit in East Kilbride for examination.
In the laboratory, a radiocarbon analysis was carried out and in this way the approximate age of the object was determined. The shoe turned out to be a really rare find.
The fact that it lay for 3 thousand years and was preserved can be explained as a small scientific miracle.
Most often, things made of leather and textiles are not stored due to anaerobic conditions. In simple terms, in the ground or in the sand, it should have simply rotted.
The length of the shoe is only 15 cm. The shoe was most likely a child’s shoe. In terms of size, it could be suitable for a child of 2-3 years.
Before this find, the shoe found in the Somerset quarry was considered the oldest in the world. He was 2000 years old at the time of his discovery.
But now there is a new contender for the title of oldest shoe in the world.
Tomlinson is incredibly happy to have been lucky enough to discover this artifact.
And let it not be as expensive as gold jewelry, but it is special. Such an extraordinary find brought him fame in the narrow circles of archaeologists.
Such finds can tell a lot about the life of that time: how and what people dressed, for example. You can also try to restore the technology of production of clothes and shoes.
It opens the curtain on people’s daily worries, artisans’ skills, etc. It is expected that after the completion of all research, the shoe will go to the British Museum and will be able to be seen by tourists.
