US, WASHINGTON (ORDO NEWS) — UN launches project to support poor countries in the fight against coronavirus COVID-19. According to preliminary data, the budget of the response plan will be $ 2 billion, said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. More than 43 thousand people are infected with the coronavirus in the world, almost 20 thousand people have died.
“Today we are launching a global humanitarian response plan totaling $ 2 billion to finance the fight against COVID-19 in the world’s poorest countries,” Mr. Guterres told reporters (quoted by RIA Novosti ). He said that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs will be involved in the project and “with proper funding, it will save many lives and supply humanitarian agencies and NGOs with laboratory supplies for testing and medical equipment for treating patients.”
Under the UN plan, the necessary laboratory equipment for testing for the virus and medicines for treating people will be delivered to vulnerable countries, and hand washing stations will be installed in camps and settlements.
In addition, a campaign will be launched to inform people about measures to protect against the virus, and throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America, they will create hubs to move humanitarian workers and supplies to where they are most needed.
According to the UN Secretary General, the plan also includes additional measures to support countries that continue to “open their homes and cities for refugees and displaced persons.”
