NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — Nitrous oxide, known as laughing gas, has gained popularity not only as a recreational drug but also as an anesthetic used in medical procedures. Thanks to its cheapness and availability online, nitrous oxide has become one of the most popular drugs for those looking for a quick high. However, experts are increasingly concerned about the widespread use of this substance and its potential health consequences.
According to the 2021 Global Drug Survey , 10% of all respondents and 15% of Canadian respondents admitted to using nitrous oxide within the previous year. These alarming statistics highlight the prevalence of the drug among young people and raise concerns about its long-term effects.
Dr. Cyrille De Halleux, an internal medicine and critical care physician and resident at SickKids in Toronto, Ontario, emphasizes the popularity of nitrous oxide because of its low cost and easy availability. He warns that the trend is especially common among young people who are drawn to the drug’s recreational effects.
One of the most significant health risks associated with chronic nitrous oxide use is functional vitamin B12 deficiency. This deficiency can lead to severe neurological and long-term health consequences. The three most common manifestations of nitrous oxide toxicity are myelopathy (spinal cord damage), neuropathy (nerve damage affecting strength and sensation), and encephalopathy (behavioral disturbances).
In a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Dr. De Galle and David N. Jurlink emphasize the importance of physicians inquiring about the use of nitrous oxide in patients with unexplained symptoms suggestive of vitamin B12 deficiency or other associated neurological symptoms. Early detection and intervention are critical to prevent further damage and recovery.
Treatment for nitrous oxide toxicity includes avoiding use of the substance and taking vitamin B12 and methionine. However, the best option is to avoid nitrous oxide abuse altogether. Awareness campaigns, stricter regulations for online sales, and education of the public about the potential dangers of this recreational drug are needed to address this growing problem.
Experts in the field emphasize the need to develop comprehensive strategies that address both the demand and supply of nitrous oxide. Dr. de Galle suggests, “To address this new public health challenge, we need to focus on prevention, education and harm reduction.”
Recreational use of nitrous oxide may seem like harmless fun to some, but in reality it is far from true. The dangers associated with chronic use can have significant and long-lasting effects on a person’s health and well-being. It is critical that society comes together to address this issue and protect the vulnerable populations most at risk.
