(ORDO NEWS) — Researchers at the University of Southern California in the US have been able to trace the formation of memories in zebra fish. The results of the work are described in the scientific journal Quanta.
The scientists used genetically engineered zebra fish for laboratory purposes, which they chose because they are transparent in their fry state and are easy to study.
Using light exposure, the team was able to trace the brain activity of the fish, and then study the process of memory formation in the brains of the experimental subjects.
According to the results, the type of memories affects how long the brain will store them – scarier ones are stored in memory longer.
The researchers believe that the results provide a better understanding of why traumatic moments in life are harder to work through.
