(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists have told which countries will be able to survive a possible nuclear war and help preserve and then restore human civilization. Australia is the most suitable for this, followed by New Zealand.
The study, published in the journal Risk Analysis, described Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu as island nations most capable of producing enough food for their populations following a “sudden sunlight-depleting catastrophe” such as a nuclear war, an eruption a supervolcano or an asteroid impact.
At the same time, scientists note that there will be “groups of survivors, even under the worst-case scenario” around the world.
At the same time, those who are in the most stable countries have the highest chances of avoiding a pre-industrial collapse.
In the study, scientists compared 38 island states on 13 factors that they believe can predict the success of a state’s survival after the apocalypse.
They included food production, energy autonomy, production features and the impact of natural disasters on the climate.
Australia and New Zealand are strong agricultural producers and are hidden from possible fallout sites in the Northern Hemisphere. This allowed them to take the lead and Australia had the best results overall.
Australia came first due to its infrastructure, excess energy production, high level of health security and defense budget.
But there is a very important factor working against it: relatively close military ties with Great Britain and the United States made it a more likely target of nuclear war.
New Zealand has gained some advantages from its nuclear-free status, as well as resilience in the event of a global temperature plunge caused by the Dark Age.
“There is this super-efficient food export economy that can feed New Zealanders many times over just from exports,” said one of the study’s authors, Professor Nick Wilson of the University of Otago in Wellington.
He added that even in a worst-case scenario – a 61% crop cut during a prolonged nuclear winter – New Zealanders would still have enough to eat.
At the same time, according to the scientist, the closure of world trade can accelerate social collapse in the country.
