(ORDO NEWS) — For the first time in 35 years, a team of scientists from various disciplines has come together to develop official alien contact protocols.
According to the authors of the idea, the whole world will have to follow these rules in case of a sudden meeting with representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations.
As reported by Live Science, there is currently only one protocol for dealing with sudden contact with aliens. It was created in 1989 by the scientific community of the Institute for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).
However, the document is outdated: it mainly focuses on the importance of sharing contact information with the public and the wider scientific community.
And the only practical advice that this protocol gives scientists is to seek guidance from the UN in the event of sudden contact with aliens.
Moreover, it is not clear what the UN should do in this case. In fact, the question remains open: “What if tomorrow an extraterrestrial civilization sends us a message?” How should humanity react?
However, neither humanity as a whole nor the scientific community were prepared for the fact that aliens would contact us. So far, no one has found any traces of aliens.
On the other hand, in recent years, astronomers have been finding more and more evidence of the existence of organics in deep space. Potential traces of life have recently been discovered on Mars.
And this means that contact cannot be ruled out. It was this logic that guided a group of specialists in various fields, uniting to develop the first official protocol in the event of “contact with aliens.”
“Science fiction is replete with research on the impact on human society after discovering and even encountering life or intelligence on other planets,” says John Eliot of the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, coordinator of the newly established SETI Signal Detection Center.
The new group will “go beyond thinking about the impact on humanity” of a potential alien encounter and instead focus on how we should respond to such an encounter, he said.
In addition, no matter how fantastic it may seem, the new SETI center will scan space signals for potential messages sent by alien life forms, and develop an algorithm for decoding such signals. “Will we ever get a message from aliens?” Elliot asks.
“We don’t know. We also don’t know when, if, it will happen. But we know we can’t afford to be ill-prepared, scientifically.” , for an event that could become a reality tomorrow.”
