Scientists: 3 dose of Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines effectively protect against “omicron”
(ORDO NEWS) — American scientists have found that three doses of coronavirus vaccines provide the strongest protection against “omicron”. Moreover, these doses against a new variety of covid are as effective as two doses – against strains “alpha” and “delta”.
The BMJ article reports on the effectiveness of the third dose of Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines in protecting against the omicron variant.
Scientists studied the effect of two and three doses of these vaccines on the level of protection of the body against “alpha”, “delta” and “omicron” strains.
In total, specialists analyzed data on 11,690 adults who were admitted to 21 hospitals in the United States from March 2021 to January 2022 with and without covid (5,728 people) and without it (5,962 people).
Patients were divided into three groups: with the variant “alpha”, “delta” and “omicron”. Next, the effectiveness of vaccines against different strains of covid was studied.
It turned out that two doses of mRNA vaccines were less effective against “omicron” than against “delta” and “alpha”: 65, 85 and 85 percent, respectively. At the same time, the third dose increased protection against the Omicron strain to 86 percent.
