(ORDO NEWS) — New York has returned to the use of robotic dogs in police work. Mayor Eric Adams announced the acquisition of two Spot robots from Boston Dynamics in the amount of $750,000 for use by the police.
In the past, these machines were taken out of service after public outcry about their use in spying on citizens.
However, according to the mayor, robotic dogs will only be used in cases of a bomb threat, which should reassure disgruntled citizens.
However, the STOP initiative group opposed the use of these robots in police work, calling them “fake robocops.”
They fear that robotic dogs could be used to monitor citizens more widely and interfere with their privacy.
Despite this, the NYPD has already documented several instances of the use of robotic dogs.
In 2020, the car was used for reconnaissance in the case when a suspect barricaded himself in his house. In 2021, a robot helped police investigate the inside of a building where another suspect had fled.
In addition, the NYPD has purchased another law enforcement robot, as well as an installation that will help chase cars with GPS beacons.
The use of robots in police work is controversial in society, but in any case, they represent a new opportunity to improve the safety and efficiency of police work.
