(ORDO NEWS) — California-based startup Neuralink, founded by business tycoon Elon Musk, is inviting volunteers to take part in a brain implant trial. The brain chip company has announced that it is recruiting participants for brain computer interface (BCI) experiments.
The main goal of this ambitious project is to help people suffering from paralysis caused by cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis regain control of their bodies. Neuralink has developed a unique implant that will be inserted into the area of the brain responsible for movement using a surgical robot.
One of the main ambitious aspects of this study is that participants are able to control a computer or keyboard using just the power of their thoughts.
The intrigue of this study lies not only in its goals, but also in how it will be conducted. Preliminary plans call for ten patients, but following safety concerns from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Neuralink revised its plan and is currently in the process with a more limited number of participants.
The FDA’s final decision regarding approved patients remains unknown.
Elon Musk has unveiled ambitious plans for Neuralink, claiming the technology could be key to a variety of diseases including obesity, autism, depression and schizophrenia. In May of this year, the company received FDA approval to conduct its first clinical trials in humans.
However, even if the BCI device proves to be effective and efficient, Neuralink may face a long process of obtaining approval for its commercial use, which could take more than a decade.
