(ORDO NEWS) — In the studied samples of plant leaves, scientists for the first time found traces of microplastics. The discovery was made at the University of Presov in Slovakia.
The corresponding scientific work is published in the journal BioRisk.
Plants of the genus Dipsacus have characteristic paired leaves. They form a kind of receptacles that collect water and attract insects into it. Fragments and fibers of multi-colored microplastics up to 2.4 mm long were found there.
No third-party sources of pollution around the territory were recorded, so the plastic got into the flowers from the polluted atmosphere, the scientists concluded.
The second option for the origin of plastic is that snails could bring it.
