(ORDO NEWS) — The Indonesian city of Jakarta is home to one of the most unusual residential developments in the world, a suburb perched atop a 10-story shopping mall.
Over the past 20 years, Jakarta has become one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world.
The metropolitan area alone has a population of over 10 million, and the Jakarta area has three times as many as the greater Jakarta area. The city is rapidly running out of land for construction.
While other crowded capitals like Tokyo are expanding vertically, Jakarta is expanding horizontally, with most residents opting for low-rise buildings over apartments.
With a growing shortage of real estate, developers were forced to think outside the box, and that’s how the city’s oddities called Cosmo Park (Cosmo Park) appeared.
Consisting of 78 two-story villas with their own network of paved roads, lots of green spaces, swimming pools and even a tennis court, the Cosmo Park looks like an ordinary suburb.
But zoom out a bit and you’re in for a major shock. The entire building is located on the rooftop of a 10-story mall in downtown Jakarta Thamrin City Mall.
The space park has been around for about 14 years, but few knew of its existence outside of the bustling Indonesian capital until 2019, when a photo posted on social media began to gain traction.
It showed the residential complex from the air, with the rest of the city on the ground spread out around it. The bizarre layout has left people scratching their heads over the safety of such a project.
Some residents of Cosmo Park admitted that they, too, thought it was strange when they first saw pictures of the buildings.
The idea of living so high up in a city where low-rise buildings are the norm seemed strange, but when they visited the place, they simply fell in love with the peace and quiet and the privacy it offered despite being in the middle of a busy capital Cities.
The entire residential area is divided into 5 blocks, from A to F, and only those who have a special pass can enter it.
Residents can drive in and out of the complex on a special ramp, and the whole place is surrounded by a high metal fence to prevent accidents.
Back in 2019, houses in Cosmo Park cost from 3 to 5 billion rupees (from 14 million to 23 million rubles), but with global inflation, real estate is becoming increasingly scarce, and, most likely, today prices are even higher.
