(ORDO NEWS) — An ancient Egyptian scarab figurine was discovered in Israel.
Eighth grade students from the city of Azor, near Tel Aviv, took part in a tour guide course that taught them about the local archaeological heritage. Suddenly, the team leader, Gilad Stern, noticed something unusual on the ground.
“We were walking when I saw what looked like a small toy,” he says. – An inner voice told me: “Take it and turn it over.” I was amazed – it was a highly visible scarab, the dream of any amateur archaeologist.
The figurine was most likely created in 1500-1000 BC. The relief image on it was used as a seal and served to demonstrate status and power.
Presumably, it could be attached to a ring or necklace. It is not clear how exactly the object ended up in the ground – it was buried intentionally or dropped by accident.
The seal is made of faience covered with a bluish-green glaze. It depicts in relief a scene that is believed to demonstrate the ritual of bestowing legitimacy on a new ruler.
A man is clearly visible sitting in front of a standing figure who raises his hand above the seated figure.
A standing person has an elongated head – this is how the artist could depict the crown of the Egyptian pharaoh.
“This scene reflects the geopolitical reality that prevailed in the land of Canaan during the Late Bronze Age, when local rulers lived under the political and cultural hegemony of Egypt and periodically rebelled,” the scientists explain.
