(ORDO NEWS) — Melting glaciers in the mountains can be a great danger to more than 15 million people on Earth. Melt water fills the places where the body of the glacier once was and forms the so-called glacial lake.
If the water level in such lakes rises too high or it breaks through the soil or ice, then the lake can collapse down in a real tsunami along with stones, blocks of ice and trees.
This phenomenon is called a glacial lake outburst, 15 million people around the world are now at risk of an “internal tsunami” living within 50 km of glacial lakes. More than half of them are residents of India, Pakistan, Peru and China.
It is noted that this is the first study that specifically looks at the potential impact of glacial lake outbursts, which experts say cannot be overestimated.
