(ORDO NEWS) — Scientists from the University of Miami in the United States have identified the first two cases of children born with brain damage caused by a coronavirus infection in the mother during pregnancy.

In the first case, the child was diagnosed with microcephaly, a condition in which the head and brain are smaller than normal, the researchers said.

The second infant had neurological symptoms associated with brain damage.

Both mothers tested positive for COVID-19 during pregnancy but did not develop symptoms of the infection.

The researchers suggest that the increase in the inflammatory response in the mother’s body caused by coronavirus may affect the formation of the fetal brain.

“This is the first time we’ve been able to demonstrate a virus in a placental fetal organ.

That’s why we think it’s so important,” said Michael Pads, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Miami.

Scientists note that these observations are not final, but indicate the potential danger of coronavirus for pregnant women and their unborn children.

Researchers call for precautions and prevention of COVID-19 during pregnancy.
