(ORDO NEWS) — As it turned out, it is not so difficult to overcome stress: this does not require sedation and abstraction at all. Only physical activity is required.
Scientists at Emory University School of Medicine conducted an experiment on mice, finding that rodents become calmer after running around in a wheel. The mice release the neuropeptide galanin. This feature also exists in humans.
The experiment lasted three weeks. The first group of mice had a wheel, while the second did not. The rodents were measured twice: after a stressful event and every 24 hours.
Mice with a wheel, as it turned out, tolerated stress much better. Running helped them not be so anxious. An increased concentration of galanin was found in the blue spot (the so-called area of the brain).
Another interesting fact is that the mice have become accustomed to some training. They regularly ran in the wheel, which allowed them to become more stress-resistant. It is important to note that it is not fully understood how sports, at a neurobiological level, can help combat stress.
Scientists so far can simply state the fact that in order to calm down one should have at least primitive physical activity. Exercising also helps to distract from problems and relax for a while.
