(ORDO NEWS) — Yesterday (March 21, 2022) a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 crashed in southern China. On board the aircraft were 132 people – 123 passengers and 9 crew members.
The particular Boeing 737-800 operated by the PRC was six years old, according to the Aviation Safety Network.
The Boeing 737-800 is one of the most common passenger aircraft in history, but it should not be confused with the 737 Max, which went out of service after two plane crashes in 2018 and 2019 caused by design flaws.
It is worth noting that flight safety has improved significantly in recent years. The Boeing 737 entered service in 1967. Since 2000, the number of reported incidents and accidents has decreased with each successive decade.
In the first decade of the 2000s, there were 31 incidents involving all modifications of the Boeing 737, only four of which did not result in fatalities.
There were 20 reported incidents in the 2010s, including two Boeing 737 Max crashes. Of these 20 incidents, eight did not result in human casualties.
For aircraft in general, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the number of fatal accidents in 2018 was 0.28 per 1 million flights, which is equivalent to one fatal accident in every 4.2 million flights.
