(ORDO NEWS) — For the treatment of chronic constipation, American researchers have developed a vibrator capsule.
In patients who took these capsules for five days, the work of the lower intestine improved markedly.
Between 30 and 50 percent of the adult population in developed countries suffers from chronic constipation, a long-term disorder of the digestive tract in which the patient has trouble passing a normal bowel movement.
This condition not only worsens overall health, but can also lead to dangerous complications.
Until now, there were only medical treatments for constipation, which were not suitable for all patients, and could further exacerbate the problem.
However, researchers from several research centers in the United States have developed an innovative way to solve the problem of constipation – a vibrating capsule.
The study involved 308 adult patients suffering from chronic constipation: 163 people took a vibrator capsule five days a week for eight weeks, the remaining 145 received a placebo.
The capsules were programmed for two two-hour vibration sessions, during which three seconds of vibration was followed by 16 seconds of rest.
At the end of both sessions, the capsule was turned off and excreted from the body naturally.
The study found that patients who took the vibrator capsule had almost twice as many complete bowel movements as those who took placebo: 39 percent versus 22 percent, respectively.
Other symptoms of chronic constipation, such as loose stools or a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, also improved in those who took the vibrator capsule.
Only 11 percent of patients reported mild vibration sensations while taking the capsule.
The researchers hope that the new method of treating constipation will not only help a huge number of people (there are more than 40 million in the US alone), but will also become a solution to the main problem of medical methods – their destructive effect on the intestinal microbiome.
In the future, scientists plan to make it possible to adjust the work of the capsule to the daily routine of a particular person or even remotely control its work.
