NEW YORK, BRONX (ORDO News) — Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Scientists have devoted a lot of work to its beneficial health properties. A new study has found that drinking coffee daily can help you lose weight, but it’s important to follow a specific rule to achieve the benefits.
In a study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition , American researchers traced the relationship between coffee consumption, changes in weight and the addition of sugar and creamer (natural or plant-based) to the drink. To do this, scientists reviewed data from more than 155 thousand participants in three long-term group studies conducted in the United States. These included the Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II , which examined the long-term effects of nutrition, hormones, environment and work activities of nurses on their health and disease development.
All participants completed a survey on their food and drink consumption during the last year before the start of the study. The surveys were then repeated annually for the next four years of observation.
An analysis of participants’ coffee and supplementation habits found that each additional cup of unsweetened coffee per day (caffeinated or decaffeinated) was associated with a 0.12-pound reduction in four-year weight gain.
Adding natural or plant-based cream did not significantly influence changes in weight. However, if the coffee was sweetened, each teaspoon of sugar (per cup) was associated with gaining 0.09 kilograms over a four-year period. Scientists also found that the relationship was stronger at a younger age and with an increased initial body mass index.
Based on the results, the researchers concluded that unsweetened coffee consumption (caffeinated and decaffeinated) was inversely associated with weight gain. Adding sugar to coffee negates the weight management benefits of drinking it.
The list of potential benefits to the body from coffee is very wide. It is known from other studies that drinking this drink can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes , obesity and even some types of cancer. Scientists have also found a link between drinking coffee daily and reducing mortality from specific diseases and all causes.
Research indicates that coffee has positive health effects, mainly by activating the sympathetic nervous system and increasing energy expenditure. Experts from the University of Copenhagen previously found that small amounts of milk can enhance the anti-inflammatory effects of coffee. “Milk” proteins bind to “coffee” polyphenols, enhancing their antioxidant effect and reducing inflammatory processes.
At the same time, it is important not to forget that sugar and its artificial substitutes actually nullify the benefits of coffee. Nutritionists advise limiting the consumption of any sugar-containing drinks.
