(ORDO NEWS) — The Caspian Sea is shrinking due to the fact that its feeding rivers are gradually drying up.
This can become a serious problem for Kazakhstan, as up to 55,000 cubic meters of water is extracted from this reservoir per day for people and industry.
The level of the Caspian Sea has reached a critical level of minus 28.5 m. This was observed in the 1980s.
Ecologists believe that a drop of half a meter below could negatively affect the ecosystem of the sea, especially the shallow Kazakhstani part of the Caspian Sea, according to a video prepared by the local news portal Informburo.kz.
The critical situation with the shallowing of rivers is not only in Kazakhstan: rising temperatures and drought are negatively affecting water bodies around the world.
For example, in the US, there is now the same problem with the country’s largest reservoir, Lake Mead, on the border of the states of Nevada and Arizona.
Previously, Plus-one.ru talked about the threat of an environmental disaster due to the shallowing of the Great Salt Lake in the US state of Utah.
The waters receding from the shore expose deposits of minerals saturated with arsenic, lead, mercury and other toxic elements and heavy metals that have accumulated there over the years of industrial and agricultural activity.
The wind raises clouds of sand from the dry bottom, creating poisonous dust storms.
