An orbiter captures an angel-shaped depression on Mars

(ORDO NEWS) — The European Space Agency has published interesting images taken by the Mars Express orbiter. Their peculiarity lies in the fact that they show a depression in the form of an angel.

The deepening was formed during the sublimation of ice, erosion of rocks and the fall of a large body.

The pictures were taken in the southern hemisphere of the planet, which is of great interest to scientists. This is due, first of all, to the reserves of water vapor and frozen carbon dioxide.

The study of these components allows not only to better understand the structure of the polar caps and the seasonality of the climate, but also to draw conclusions about the suitability of Mars for habitation.

The Mars-Express apparatus has been in operation for 17 years. By the end of the next year, the specialists decided to post a number of interesting pictures on the Web. In their opinion, a Christmas angel is clearly visible in the photographs. Several others taken on November 8 this year were combined to produce one image.

The deepening was formed due to completely different processes in each separate area. The right side is a large sublimation pit, and the left is the result of dust vortices. The top received its appearance due to the fall of a meteorite, and the bottom – erosion.
