(ORDO NEWS) — The Pileus cloud was observed by residents of the Chinese city of Haihou on August 21, 2022. Eyewitnesses of the unique natural phenomenon filmed it and posted it on the Web.
Pileus is a rare atmospheric phenomenon accompanied by a rainbow. It is named after the headgear of a priest of the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches due to its strong resemblance to it.
Such clouds are formed as a result of cooling and condensation of moist air. When sunlight strikes at a right angle, the light refracts between the drops and ice crystals in the cloud, creating an iridescent color.
